Infrared and Vibration analysis combine to pinpoint pump misalignment.
A predictive maintenance technology program has been recently started at the Dam Neck, Virginia training facility of the US Navy. Maintenance Reliability Group provided the initial training and field set-up to kick this program off. Already, important insight has been gained into some of the root causes of reduced machinery reliability and life.
The attached images show vibration spectra and an IR image of the coupling from a chilled water pump. The infrared image shows the non-uniform heating profile of the coupling, while the infrared spectra illustrate a misalignment condition by highlighting the higher axial amplitudes.
The misalignment in this case is a combination of shaft misalignment and soft foot. With a real-time spectral analyzer, we were able to demonstrate a significant reduction in motor bearing vibration by selectively loosening one motor foot bolt at a time. Levels dropped from 1.8 inches per second to less than 0.4 inches per second.
This condition is seriously affecting the performance and life of this pump by imparting significant forces to the motor bearings and coupling insert. The adjacent pump, exhibiting similar characteristics, has a severely worn coupling insert that is very close to failing.
By identifying these problems before failure, and most importantly, determining the causal factors, the inherent problems with these machines can be corrected to ensure their long-term trouble-free operation. |
